Weekend In San Francisco

Friday February 8th, 2019

I woke up early as I usually do to head on over to work. I saw a few patients in the morning, but took off early around 11:45AM to get ready for my flight to NorCal. I took a Lyft from my grandparents’ place to John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, CA. I much prefer this airport over LAX. First of all, it’s only 10 minutes from me, and second, it’s no where near as hectic as LAX.

I never really check bags because it’s kind of a hassle & I’m scared of losing my bags haha.. So when I got to the airport, all I had to do was head to security because I’ve already checked-in online. Overachiever, I know. ;)

The line for TSA was very smooth & easy as it usually is here. There were maybe 5 people ahead of me. Again, another reason why I prefer SNA over LAX.

I was flying with Southwest Airlines and I completely forgot that they board by group numbers instead of assigning seats.. I typically would love this but I checked-in pretty late this time around so I was supposed to be one of the last ones to board.

I still managed to snag a window seat though, so it was no big deal. I didn’t realize just how tired I was because I basically fell right asleep the second I sat down.

The flight was a short 50 minute flight. Umm I could get used to this! I wish all flights were this short.. I woke up in the middle of the flight and just listened to a podcast for the remainder of the flight. It was some funny dating podcast. (Dating’s rough, amirite? So it’s nice to listen to others’ amusing dating stories).

My plane landed at the San Jose Airport instead of San Francisco because my friend who was picking me up worked about 10 minutes from this airport. Well, it was supposed to be 10 minutes. But since I landed around 3:00PM, I guess it was prime traffic time, so it took about 30 minutes. It was no big deal, I got to walk around & check out the airport! (And take selfies in the airport bathroom!!)

My friend picked me up around 3:45PM and we were headed to San Francisco. There was a ton of traffic so we were in the car for almost 2 hours! Time flew by though because we were just talking & catching up. We were also listening to the artist Two Friends because we were going to that concert later that night. He showed me the remixes which I didn’t even know existed, because on Spotify, they only had their originals. But yeah, time passed pretty quickly, I honestly couldn’t believe it was about 5:45PM when we arrived.

We were both pretty hungry, so after we dropped off my bags at the apartment, we went on yelp to find something to eat. We came across this Jamaican restaurant that was within walking distance, so we decided on that. Well, my friend decided because I’m the most indecisive person ever. But I was game because I’ve never tried Jamaican food before! And as I always tell people, ‘I’m trying to be more adventurous when it comes to food‘.

The restaurant was called Kaya. It was a quaint little spot with a great atmosphere. They had a DJ, a bar in the middle, and a Jamaican movie projected onto the wall behind us. We started off with a couple cocktails, then decided on the jerk chicken and salt fish dishes to share.

After dinner, we met up with a friend of his at the apartment and we all headed over to their friend’s house for a pregame. The house was full of people and I knew not a single person there except for my friend. Let me tell you, socializing is tiring, hahaha. Okay, I’m definitely an introvert. But either way, everyone was incredibly friendly though & I had a great time.

Around 10:30PM, we all ubered over to The Regency Ballroom for the Two Friends Concert. I actually enjoyed the music they were playing & the concert ended up being really fun. I also ended up running into a friend I made back at Escape Festival on Halloween weekend, so what were the chances of that? Small world!

After the concert, the three of us walked back to my friend’s apartment to call it a night.

I woke up to an incredible view of San Francisco. The apartment was a corner unit with a bunch of windows, which is my absolute favorite layout.

We went on a little walk to Monsieur Benjamin to grab some brunch. I thought brunch was a big thing in LA but apparently it’s a really big thing in SF. We ordered this incredible ham, spinach, & mushroom crepe, and a huge French toast dish. We did this so we could both share a savory & sweet dish. This is perfect because I always need a little bit of both.

Afterwards, we took a little stroll around the neighborhood. We stopped at Smitten for some ice cream. Smoothest, creamiest ice cream ever. Apparently the owner of this place dropped out of Stanford University to pursue this because she was so successful when selling it out of a little wagon! How interesting. We ended up ordering both of the seasonal flavors: Vietnamese Iced Coffee & Earl Grey Lavender. See, it’s nice having a friend when trying new places to eat because you get to try more flavors!!

We stopped at a few of his favorite boutiques to just browse. I loved this little neighborhood. I’ve always been a fan of cities that are very walkable with boutiques & stores underneath where people lived. We also happened to stumble upon a charming little plant & succulent store!

After our little walk, we went for a drive to this lookout spot next to the ocean. It was still raining & the sky was a bit hazy, but the view was breathtaking nevertheless.

Back at the apartment, we decided to watch 22 Jump Street because my friend had never seen it.. And it was one of the funniest movies so I had to make sure he watched it. It didn’t disappoint. I was laughing so hard, I was on the verge of tears.

After the movie, he had to help his roommate get ready for his birthday party that was happening this evening.

I had wanted to take a nap but decided I should probably go get ready instead.

After getting ready, we walked over to the local market to pick up some pizza for dinner. Between the two of us we got 4 different slices to try. I wasn’t even that hungry until I saw how incredible these pizzas looked. I ended up eating too much and got super sleepy.

He told me I had enough time to sneak a nap in before everyone came over so that’s exactly what I did. It was around 8:30PM and everyone would be coming over at 9:30PM, so I told myself an hour would be plenty.

Tell me how I ended up sleeping until 11:30PM…

He came in to check up on me a few times which was sweet. I honestly could’ve slept through the entire night but I felt so bad because it was his birthday party after all.

So I finally woke up and walked out to the party around 11:30PM like I said. All of his friends were super cool and inviting. In the end, I’m glad I forced myself to get out of bed and socialize haha.

As much as I had wanted to sleep in, I woke up early once again. My body is just used to waking up early for work I guess, so I’m always up fairly early. My friend was still asleep when I got up, so I ended up drifting in & out of sleep waiting for him to get up.

Around 11:00AM, I got packed & we got everything ready to head out for the day. My flight was at 3:00PM in San Jose, so we had some time to go grab food. We went to this cute French bakery in San Francisco with the best croissants I’ve ever tasted.

The texture was just perfect, I’ve never had any croissant like it. It was super soft & buttery in the inside, and the perfect amount of flakiness on the outside. Like we usually do, we ordered a bunch of different pastries to share. My favorite was the jalepeno ham & cheese croissant. The quiche was a bit different. A bit more sour than I would have expected it to be.

We took the food to go so I would make my flight on time. The drive to San Jose was about 45 minutes.

I made it with about an hour to spare at the airport.

At the airport, I was already missing San Francisco. I don’t know what it is about this city that I love so much, but every time I visit, I find myself falling in love all over again.
